Website design has evolved a lot and it is now far away from the fold that was displayed even decades back on websites. All decisions on website design depended on this element of fold without which it was not complete. However, now website design has evolved to go above the fold and focused more on scrolling.
Web Design in Modern Era
In the modern era, websites are designed in all shapes and sizes to make them mobile responsive. Small and big all sorts are devices are used to view websites nowadays. Website users derive ultimate flexibility by using websites from any kind of device they want. If you assume that website owners no longer care about displaying content above the fold, you are in for a surprise because they are still asked for this type of designs. However, according to the modern day designers, the concept of fold should be banished just like comic sans relief and dancing pizza gif images. These are allowed but should not be used in professional website design projects.
Here are some points to make you understand the diminishing importance of fold:
- Multi-Screen- We live in a multi-screen environment where small size monitor does not exist anymore. The fold size must suit the size of the screen or monitor otherwise it is of no point.
- Scrolling is Important- Scrolling is easy and can be done with little effort on the web pages. Scrolling is intuitive and thus we use it more than the fold.
- 600px Doesn’t Help in Telling Story- It generally takes more than 600px to tell a true story. With the story unfolding, the reader digests information and that continues with scrolling the page.
- The Fold relates to Newspapers- Above the Fold was a term suited for news papers and not websites. It does not make sense to use an old concept for modern website designs.
- Visitor Conversion Doesn’t Require Above the Fold- Converting a web visitor requires publishing good content and nothing else. It does not depend on the fold. Instead, it depends on scrolling from up to down. The call to action is also clear in this case and people are interested to take action by following this sequence.
User Focused Design is the Norm of the Day
User focused web design is focused on providing real information to the reader which is served in the form of quality content. The visitor also expects you to solve his problem by providing all the information. No matter whatever service you provide, the visitors will take action based on the content. Producing high content rate has got much more to do with persuasive content and not with locations. Scrolling is obviously intuitive and this helps create a positive impact on the readers which above the fold will not be able to create.
Thus, it is high time to bid goodbye to the “above the fold” and introduce scrolling which his much more user-friendly.
